Tamoil takes another step forward in its energy transition by installing a photovoltaic power plant at its industrial site in Aigle
Tamoil is today inaugurating a photovoltaic power plant at its oil products depot in Aigle, marking a new milestone in its energy diversification strategy. Tamoil is a a long-standing player in the oil sector, and through this investment is reaffirming its commitment to becoming a multi-energy supplier, capable of meeting new energy needs while gradually reducing its dependency on fossil fuels. This project reflects the company’s strong resolve to become a key player in energy transition, combining innovation, environmental responsibility and industrial performance.
Built on 15'000 sqm of existing industrial land, the plant consists of 3,006 solar panels with a total capacity of 2,089 kWp. It will generate the equivalent of 2.3 million kWh of energy per year, 700,000 kWh of which will be used on-site by the oil depot. The remaining 1.6 million kWh will be fed into the local grid, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 400 four-person households. The plant is one of the largest ground-built solar parks in Switzerland.
The project was rendered possible by the commitment of our shareholders and our internal teams, and by the close work with technical partners, local authorities and government departments. It provides a good example of the role that producers can play in regional energy planning.
The plant is part of a broader programme of renewable energy projects developed by Tamoil in Switzerland and in the countries where the group operates, such as the installation at our service stations of EV charging stations, which are partially powered by electricity from photovoltaic panels installed on the roofs and canopies of the stations. These investments aim to accelerate our energy transition, while ensuring a reliable, competitive and carbon-free response to energy needs.
The Aigle depot
The Aigle depot is part of Tamoil's logistics infrastructure, which includes 12 depots across Switzerland. Today, the Aigle depot plays a key role in supplying French-speaking Switzerland with fuel, alongside the Geneva depots and the Cressier refinery. Twenty-four storage tanks can hold up to 400,000 m3 of fuel and combustible materials. This depot alone accounts for more than 6% of the country's total storage capacity, and more than 12% for petrol alone. Every year, over 300 trains – more than 7,000 wagons - supply the depot. Every day, some 100 trucks load up in Aigle for deliveries throughout French-speaking Switzerland and Valais, representing 500,000 m3 per year, or 10% of Swiss petrol consumption and 7% of diesel consumption.
The Aigle depot is also part of the strategic infrastructure for our country, since nearly 80% of its capacity is used to store the mandatory stocks required by Carbura and the Federal Office for National Economic Supply.
For many years now, the Aigle depot has been investing in the storage and distribution of biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel. Ethanol and biodiesel are stored in large quantities and automatically mixed with fuels when tanker trucks are loaded, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions while ensuring that products comply with current standards. In 2024, a new milestone was reached with the commissioning of HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil, also known as synthetic diesel) storage and loading facilities to further reduce CO₂ emissions. This product makes a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions by replacing all or part of fossil diesel. The Aigle depot is a pioneer in this field, as it is currently the only depot in French-speaking Switzerland to have invested in this type of large-scale automated facility.
