Dismantling of the TAMOIL Refinery in Collombey-Muraz: Controlled Demolition of the Two Chimneys on May 21

PRESS RELEASE

As part of the final phase of the dismantling of the former TAMOIL refinery in Collombey-Muraz, a major operation is planned involving the demolition of two industrial chimneys dating back to 1963. This operation marks a significant milestone in the redevelopment of the Collombey-Muraz site.

The two chimneys, each standing 100 metres tall, have a combined weight of approximately 4,000 tonnes of concrete and brick. The chosen method is controlled toppling using explosives, considered the safest and most appropriate solution given the technical constraints of the site.

The blast will be carried out in two successive sequences. A preliminary bird-scaring blast will be conducted to protect the wildlife present on the site.

To ensure safety and strict compliance with Swiss standards, several measures have been implemented. Tests and studies have been carried out, vibration monitoring devices will be installed, and a real-time control system will ensure that vibration levels remain within regulatory limits.

Specific arrangements have also been made to control the effects of the collapse, including the installation of cushioning rubble mattresses and the construction of a dedicated embankment designed to facilitate the fragmentation of the chimneys upon impact, thereby significantly reducing vibrations.

Special water spray systems will also be installed around the chimneys to minimise dust emissions during the collapse.

The blast is scheduled for May 21 at 2:00 p.m., subject to favourable weather conditions. If conditions are unsuitable, particularly in the event of strong winds, the operation may be postponed until the following day.

For safety reasons:

  • Drone flights over the site are strictly prohibited and may result in penalties.

  • A security perimeter will be established and fully secured by police forces to control access and traffic around the site.

Please note that this security perimeter is strictly limited to the current boundaries of the former TAMOIL refinery.

The surrounding roads will be closed and monitored by police units in accordance with the police plan, which can be consulted on the police website: road closures.
